Land Capability Assessment

WorleyParsons Canada Ltd. is a resource and energy consulting firm with an office in Victoria, BC that was retained in 2008 by Island Coastal Ventures to complete a preliminary inventory of the site’s natural features and improvements. The assessment included the following work components:

  • Background research on the site’s location, legal setting, current and historical land uses, existing infrastructure elements, climate, physiography, geology, soils, surface hydrology, and hydrogeology;
  • Field mapping of the site’s terrain features, surficial geology, soil textures and moisture regimes, aquatic features, riparian zones, and man-made drainage systems;
  • Visual examination of soil exposures within the developed parts of the site; and
  • Subsurface backhoe soil testing of the site’s undeveloped areas.

Land Capability AssessmentThe results of this work proved invaluable for the Site Adaptive Planning and Design process. More recently, the work has provided insights into site’s capacity to manage the proposed development’s stormwater and wastewater discharges using on-site systems, as well as informing recommendations for further work in such areas as environmental impact assessment, wastewater management, stormwater management, and geotechnical evaluations.
