Contaminated Sites Review
Johnston Gray Environmental, an occupational health and safety, health, and environmental consulting firm based in Nanaimo BC, was retained by Island Coastal Ventures to complete a Stage 1 Environmental Site Assessment in 2007 on the southern developed portion of the Longlands property, so that the potential for soil, surface water, and groundwater contamination on the site and adjacent lands could be quantified. This assessment included the following work components:
- Background research to determine the site’s natural environmental setting, servicing, and historical uses / occupancies of the site and adjacent properties;
- Examination of aerial photographs of the site;
- Examination of municipal and provincial records, plans, and drawings of the site;
- Examination of historical land title and other background information pertaining to the site; and
- Field examination of the site and its buildings for indicators of extant or historical contamination.
The results of this work, including confirmation that no areas of potential environmental concern were identified on or adjacent to the site, helped to rule out further constraints or costs for the project on this issue. This information again fed into the Site Adaptive Planning and Design process.
